Once the seedling has developed roots the longer roots will start to find their way out of the small holes I poked in the bottoms of the shells before I put the dirt and seed in. When I go to transplant the seedling I break pieces off of the bottom of the shell which is easy to do at this point. Then I plant the whole thing in it's new home. Hope that makes sense!* Mandy *https://www.blogger.com/profile/11203081224187743852noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6052291516625813685.post-37252698271329579272011-07-28T16:43:42.626-07:002011-07-28T16:43:42.626-07:00Do you plant the egg in the ground after you break...Do you plant the egg in the ground after you break it up with the seedlings or do you take the seedling out of the shell and plant it?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6052291516625813685.post-26639206983804656842011-04-18T05:01:06.034-07:002011-04-18T05:01:06.034-07:00Love the seeds in the egg shells, what a great ide...Love the seeds in the egg shells, what a great idea. What frost zone are you in? I'm in 6 so we cannot plant until the end of May, my tomatoes are leggy also. If they continue that way when they are transplanted they won't produce much. I'm told that if one has leggy plants, when you transplant them to dig a trench and lay most of the bottom of the plant in the trench, covering it with the soil. Leave the top of the plant out above the soil and that will help them produce more roots and become stronger, then being able to produce more fruit. Another problem with them getting leggy is they do that because they are reaching for light, which would mean that they aren't getting the adequate amounts of light they need to grow strong and healthy. Does that make sense? It's my first year doing tomatoes from seed as well. It's my first year growing anything from seed! Good luck with your plants, and thanks for commenting :)* Mandy *https://www.blogger.com/profile/11203081224187743852noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6052291516625813685.post-64461326539153051812011-04-12T10:05:05.189-07:002011-04-12T10:05:05.189-07:00I put mine on top of my gas stove to germinate! To be honest, I hadn't even thought of those containers being metal, but I think they'll be okay. They will only get sun for the first half of the day, give or take. I'll just make sure to keep a close eye on them and water frequently. Thanks for pointing that out!! The fences that were in the yard before were only about 3.5 feet high, so I bought some lattice and attached it to give me the privacy. It works nicely :) Thanks for stopping by and commenting!!* Mandy *https://www.blogger.com/profile/11203081224187743852noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6052291516625813685.post-68748592688613632812011-03-28T18:49:30.624-07:002011-03-28T18:49:30.624-07:00Amanda,

I wonder about the metal containers though. If you get full sun on those in the summer won't it cook the plants? I envy your lattice fence. If we put up a fence it has to be 8-foot privacy fence - which would block all the sunlight. It looks like you have quite a nice set-up there.Deb Whttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09805188576444827531noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6052291516625813685.post-68905246938662313902011-03-28T09:35:58.020-07:002011-03-28T09:35:58.020-07:00Hi Deb!
